Senior tech help in Washington, DC

By Senior TechAssist · · 6 min read

We help older adults across Washington, DC with the technology they use every day: phones, tablets, computers, TVs, email and staying safe from scams. Visits come to your home or apartment, and many questions can be handled by phone or video instead.

Here’s what we do, how home visits in DC work, and what to expect.

What we help with

  • Phones and tablets: setting up a new iPhone, Android phone or iPad, moving contacts and photos, and learning the basics at a comfortable pace
  • Easier to see and hear: bigger text, simpler home screens and captions. See how to make text bigger.
  • Scam protection: blocking spam calls and texts, two-step sign-in, and what to do after a suspicious call. See Medicare and bank scam calls.
  • Email: inbox cleanup, password resets and recovering a hacked email account
  • Staying in touch: FaceTime, Zoom, WhatsApp and family photo albums
  • Health portals: MyChart and other patient portals, and telehealth video visits
  • Home tech: Wi-Fi, printers, smart TVs, streaming apps and smart speakers

Home visits in DC

We make home visits throughout the District, from Capitol Hill and Southwest to Georgetown, Upper Northwest, Petworth, Brookland, and east of the river. Apartment buildings and senior residences are fine. Just let us know about building access or parking when you book.

DC home visits have a $35 travel fee, added to your total when you book, so you always know the full price before we start. Prices are on our pricing page. You can confirm your ZIP code on our service area page.

Remote help works anywhere, which is handy for a quick question or for a parent who prefers not to have visitors.

How a visit works

  1. Start with a free 15-minute call. Tell us what’s happening. We’ll suggest a home visit, remote session or Scam Shield setup.
  2. You’ll know who’s coming. Your helper’s name and photo arrive before the visit.
  3. We teach, not just fix. We work on your own devices, in plain English, and repeat steps as often as needed.
  4. Family can join, in person or by phone. Many DC families have children in Virginia, Maryland or further away who like to listen in.
  5. You keep written steps, so you’re not relying on memory later.

You pay in full by card, through a secure payment page, before your visit. Never by gift card.

Our safety standards

Scammers often pretend to be tech support, a bank, Medicare or a government agency. Government impersonation calls in particular can sound very official. So we’re clear about how we work:

  • We never call unexpectedly. We only call if you’ve booked or asked us to.
  • We never ask for passwords or payment by phone.
  • No gift cards, ever.
  • Your passwords stay yours. We help organize them and never keep them.

If a caller says they’re from the IRS, Social Security, Medicare or your bank and asks for money or personal information, hang up and call the number on your card or on the agency’s official website. Read how to spot scam calls and texts for more.

Common situations in DC

These are typical requests:

  • A new phone from a family member that needs setting up, with contacts moved over and the text made bigger
  • A flood of scam calls and texts after years at the same number. See how to block spam calls.
  • Wi-Fi that drops in an older rowhouse with thick walls, often fixed with better router placement or mesh Wi-Fi. See Wi-Fi fixes.
  • Getting ready for a telehealth visit through MyChart or another portal
  • A smart TV with too many remotes and a confusing streaming setup
